The Paton-Churdan Rockets hosted the West Harrison (Mondamin) Hawkeyes Tuesday evening in varsity basketball originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31. Game time was moved up to 5 pm in Churdan as a courtesy to the Hawkeyes, who made the two-hour road trip on a school night.
The Rockets won both games by comfortable margins.
Carleigh Paup’s 39 points led the way to a 68-24 win for the P-C girls. P-C grabbed the lead early and didn’t slow down. Score after one quarter was 32-12. The Hawkeyes were scoreless for the next 12 minutes of play. The Rockets were up 46-12 at halftime, with all seven players suited for the game playing in every quarter.
The Rockets didn’t stretch their lead in the third quarter, scoring only seven points. The Hawkeyes’ Julia Gore finally scored a 3-point basket four minutes into the third quarter to end a long scoring drought, 49-15. Score at the end of the quarter was 56-20.
Paup’s points came as 14 2-point baskets, three 3-point baskets and two free throws. Koch scored 11 points, with nine of them being as 3-point baskets. Kasey Lane scored 10 points, Gracie Geisler scored six, and Nohea Missweit scored two.
After a 64-29 win over Woodbine last night, the boys topped West Harrison 78-34. The score was 22-10 after one quarter, 42-16 at the half, and 69-27 after three quarters.
Every player suited for the game ,for both P-C and WH, played. Among the Rockets, scoring was more balanced than it has been. Noah Juergensen scored 20 points, Jake Carey scored 17, Joe Towers scored 14, and Colton Fitzpatrick scored 11. Jake Berns added five, Charlie Minnehan and Kourtlin Thacker scored two each, and Joe Thede scored one. The Rockets made only two 3-point baskets, one each for Carey and Towers. Those were both in the first half.
The girls finished their regular season at 13-7, while the boys are 17-3.
